Irongate First Shots Course

This course will stress the necessary firearm safety rules and ensure a good foundation concerning the do’s and don’ts of operating a firearm. Additionally, this course will cover the nomenclature of the pistol and its parts, pistol operation and function, maintenance and cleaning, ammunition, and loading and unloading. Stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger management, recoil management, and follow through will be discussed and demonstrated. Shooters will take the skills and techniques presented and demonstrate their ability to safely operate the pistol during courses of fire on the range.


You will need a pistol with at least one magazine. 50 rounds of FMJ or frangible ammunition. A holster is not mandatory for this course but it is preferred. If you do plan to use a holster ensure it is a rigid, sturdy holster (no collapsible fabric holsters). If you use a holster it is recommended that you wear a sturdy belt. A magazine pouch for additional magazines is preferred but is not mandatory for this course. Appropriate eye and ear protection is mandatory, a ball cap is recommended. Please bring appropriate gear/clothing for expected climate conditions.
